Thank you and happy retirement, Russell! From left to right: Niels, Russell, Christian, Louis, and Elisa.
Some careers are defined by visibility. Others are defined by impact.
As our Russell Belben steps into retirement, we want to recognise someone whose influence has been felt across products, teams, and partnerships for decades, often quietly, always thoughtfully, and never by accident.
Growing up in the UK, sailing and watersports were simply part of everyday life in the Belben family. Russell moved through various dinghy classes and somewhere between sailing sessions, he also went to school, studying and qualifying as a naval architect.
He joined a Danish start‑up led by Gert Frederiksen, who founded Frederiksen Boat Fittings. What started as an ambitious small company quickly became a recognised name in international keelboat racing circles.
Behind the scenes, Russell designed custom deck hardware that pushed boundaries while never compromising on safety or reliability. Many of those bespoke solutions evolved into standard products ultimately catching the attention of leading production builders such as X‑Yachts and Quorning Boats.

A perfect fit
After Ronstan acquired Frederiksen Boat Fittings in 2001, Russell’s approach, mindset, and values began to set the company’s course, with Ronstan hardware supporting some of the most ambitious sailing projects of the time:
Dominating Volvo Ocean Race fleets
All-hardware responsibility for Ellen MacArthur’s record-breaking campaigns on Kingfisher and the trimaran B&Q
Longstanding partnerships formed with premium yards including Southern Wind Shipyards and Contest Yachts
While others enjoyed the headlines, Russell was content knowing his engineering principles were safe and sound.
Within Ronstan’s engineering teams in Denmark and Australia, Russell became the person people leaned on. His knowledge, experience, and calm judgement shaped countless design decisions especially where custom solutions and complex load cases were involved.
Reliability and trust.
Russell’s influence extends all the way to recent work with Groupe Wichard, contributing to equipment for the new generation of commercial sailing vessels such as Grain de Sail and the TOWT fleet.
He has been a loyal supporter of Ronstan’s sales teams and distributors worldwide, joining them for boat shows, customer visits, and factory training sessions; always generous with his time and knowledge.
Thank you, Russell, for the designs we trust, the standards we uphold, and the example you’ve set for all of us. Wherever the next chapter takes you on the water, behind a drum kit, or enjoying good wine with friends we wish you well.
