The Race Is On: Melbourne to Osaka—An Epic Journey Begins

Twelve yachts etched their names into history as they surged across the start line to the sound of HMAS Arunta’s horn, marking the beginning of the Melbourne Osaka Cup. The excitement was palpable as the boats finally crossed the start line after years of preparation—all determined to conquer this 5,500-nautical-mile adventure to Osaka.

Ronstan favourites, Joker X2 was first through the heads, leading the fleet into Bass Strait. Notably, Joker X2’s Peter Dowdney, the Australasian Sales Manager for Ronstan, is ticking this challenge off his bucket list—a remarkable feat for someone so deeply involved in the sailing industry.

The Melbourne Osaka Cup is a Corinthian regatta with a staggered start. Just one more boat start on the 30th, so the chase is officially ON!  For most participants, this race is the culmination of years of preparation and passion. The final moments before departure were filled with emotion—last-minute gear checks, heartfelt goodbyes, and the excitement of the unknown. As the boats set sail, reality set in: this is an endurance race, where every mile is earned.

The first major tactical decisions come into play as the boats make their way up the east coast of Australia.

There are wind transition zones, the East Australian Current, and strong northerly winds ahead.

Supporting the Journey

As a manufacturer that values quality and reliability in sailing hardware, Ronstan is the perfect fit for offshore racing, and the Melbourne Osaka Cup is no exception. With Peter Dowdney competing aboard Joker X2, Ronstan’s involvement takes on a personal significance this year as the fleet embark on this gruelling challenge.

So, Who’s Making Moves?

As the fleet pushes forward, Curious Roo maintains a 320nm lead over the March 9th starters of Zero and Escapade.  Meanwhile, the main start fleet were hit with 25 knot headwinnds, 2-3m cross seas and a 2.5-knot current – very tough conditions.  Just before nightfall Joker X2 made a tough call to abort their idea of taking the way offshore route because it was simply “too brutal” on the crew and boat.  They’ve tacked in towards the coast and should be able to work their way up the shoreline over the next few days.

. The upcoming days will see critical shifts as the East Australian Current and developing pressure systems play a significant role in shaping strategies.  Every decision counts.

Final Thoughts: The Journey Continues

It’s been an action-packed start, with changing conditions, tactical battles, and incredible moments both at sea and on land. But don’t be fooled—this is an endurance race, and the real challenge is pacing. Skippers must find the balance between pushing hard and conserving energy for the long miles ahead.
